The Daily Muse by Susan Martin Spar

About Me

I’m a fine artist living and working in Port Angeles, WA. My medium of choice is oil but I also work in soft pastel. I paint mostly still life with the occasional landscape and figure for good measure. I especially enjoy portraiture. My work has been changing a lot over the past few years and only recently have I begun to find my creative “voice”. I’m essentially a romantic painter with some contemporary nuances but have been heavily influenced by the Dutch Masters and Renaissance painters. Contemporary heroes include David Leffel, Daniel Greene, and others too numerous to list.

I was born and raised in New York and received my early training fron the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. After working in graphic arts for 15 years, I moved to California and later to the Olympic Peninsula in northern Washington (I know, brrr!) where I became a full time artist.

I’ve received numerous awards, am, so far, in two permanent collections – Millard Sheets in Pomona, CA, and the Corona Heritage Park Museum, and enjoy collectors from all over the US and the world.

i was captivated by your demo. I have begun painting from a photograph of peaches and tomatoes in a metal colander lying in the grass. I am enjoying the challenge – I think – of the different textures and the contrasting colours of the green of the grass and the colours of the fruit. Inspired by your expertise I’m off now to try to put some of it into practise. Thank you also for the generous way you shared your skill.
